Scott Brown has six months left on his Celtic contract.

Scott Brown of Celtic runs on to the pitch with a leg brace after team mate Ryan Christie suffers an injury during the UEFA Europa League Group B match between Celtic and RB Salzburg at...

Chris Sutton has told The Record that it is imperative for Celtic to extend Scott Brown’s contract ‘immediately’.

The 33-year-old midfielder is out of contract at Celtic next summer.

The Hoops’ captain has been unable to dislodge Callum McGregor from that deep midfield role since returning from a month-long injury layoff earlier this month.

Much has been made about Brown’s future in Glasgow because not only is McGregor keeping him on the bench, but other clubs reportedly want the Celtic skipper.

According to The Daily Mail, Western Sydney Wanderers and a number of MLS sides are keen on snapping up the no-nonsense midfielder.

Brown impressed off the bench in Celtic’s 2-1 defeat by Salzburg in the Europa League on Thursday, however, and Bhoys legend Sutton calls on his former club to offer him a new deal as soon as possible.

“If there’s one thing to come out of this week, it should silence these people who are suggesting Scott Brown is finished at Parkhead,” he told The Record.

“Celtic simply must put an end to this talk about going to Melbourne and get him to sign a new deal immediately.”

It really is quite important for Celtic to sort this out sooner rather than later.

Brown, who has helped the Bhoys to back-to-back trebles since 2017, might love the club, but he presumably loves football more and you have to imagine that he would leave Glasgow if another team was offering him the regular game time that Brendan Rodgers cannot at this moment in time.
