Chris Sutton has suggested that Celtic’s role in Virgil Van Dijk’s development has been completely forgotten.

Liverpool defender Van Dijk was absolutely brilliant again last night against Napoli, as he continues to earn great plaudits.

The towering defender dominated against the Italian side, but Sutton feels that Celtic need to be given more credit for taking a chance of him.

Celtic signed Van Dijk from Groningen when he was a teenager, and gave him a chance in British football.

The centre-back developed massively during his two year stint at Parkhead, and Sutton wants to see his former club given more praise.

Van Dijk was ultimately sold by Celtic in 2015 to Southampton, and he has continued to go from strength to strength since.

The £75 million defender (Telegraph) is now considered to be one of the best defenders in world football, and his performance last night helped Liverpool progress to the knockout stages of the Champions League.
