Pundit Chris Sutton has told The Scotsman that he thinks interim manager Graeme Murty should leave the club this summer after a turbulent week.

After Pedro Caixinha’s exit in October, Rangers attempted to land Derek McInnes as their new boss but failed, leaving them to hand development coach Murty the reins until the end of the season.

Murty was largely doing a fine job, especially in 2018, and some fans even had optimism that Rangers were closing the gap to Celtic having put up a spirited performance in the 3-2 defeat at Ibrox last month.

However, Murty saw his side taken apart by Celtic in Sunday’s Scottish Cup semi-final, with Tom Rogic, Callum McGregor, Moussa Dembele and Olivier Ntcham all finding the back of the net.

The aftermath of the game has been far from pretty, as Andy Halliday slammed Murty after his substitution at Hampden Park, Alfredo Morelos and Greg Docherty rowed after the game, and both Kenny Miller and Lee Wallace have been suspended by the club after blasting Murty.

The entire situation has been a debacle, and it surely means that Rangers will be pursuing a new manager to take Murty’s place this summer.

Now, pundit Chris Sutton has commented on Murty’s future, telling The Scotsman that the former Scotland defender should leave Ibrox this summer rather than stick around as a development coach, claiming he has been undermined and should get as far away from the ‘toxic’ atmosphere at Rangers as he can.

“Would I hang around if I was Graeme Murty? No. Why would he hang around?” said Sutton. “This is a guy who went to Rangers as head development coach to try and further his coaching career, to build and gain experience. He is then launched in at the deep end. What has happened in the last week, you can see it is a toxic place.”

“He’s not been backed by the hierarchy, then for the players to turn, with the whole suspension thing this week, tells its own story. He has been undermined. There is no way back. Why on earth would he want to stay there and see players around who have let him down? If that was me, I wouldn’t want to go anywhere near the place,” he added.
