Chris Sutton thinks that Glasgow Rangers signed Ryan Kent from Liverpool because of their defeat to Celtic at Ibrox.
Ryan Kent of Rangers
Rangers director of football Mark Allen recently told Sky Sports that the defeat to Celtic at Ibrox last weekend did not spark the Gers in signing Ryan Kent from Liverpool, but Chris Sutton is not buying that, as quoted in The Daily Record.
The Gers lost the Old Firm derby to Celtic last weekend, and a day later – on the final day of the summer transfer window – Rangers signed winger Kent from Liverpool for a transfer fee reported by Sky Sports to be worth £7.5 million.
The 22-year-old winger spent the 2018-19 season on loan at Rangers and played well for Steven Gerrard’s side.
Allen told Sky Sports that the decision to sign Kent was made after the Gers booked their place in the group stage of the Europa League and had nothing to do with the team’s defeat to Neil Lennon’s team, but former Celtic striker Sutton, who now works as a pundit for BBC Sport and BT Sport, does not think so.
Sutton wrote in The Daily Record: “I’m more inclined to think the situation changed dramatically in the wake of the loss to Celtic last Sunday and it was a big outlay designed to appease fans who had just had their hope ripped away.
“Let me put this another way. If Rangers had thumped Celtic 3-0, do you think Kent would have been signed the following day? I might be wrong, but I don’t.”

Good signing for Rangers
Kent is a very good winger who will make Rangers better and enhance their chances of winning the Scottish Premiership title this season.
True, the Gers have other quality wingers such Jordan Jones and Sheyi Ojo, but Kent does offer something different and has also proved himself in the big games.
