Manchester City are short of centre-backs, so reported Manchester United target Kalidou Koulibaly could be a good option.

Chris Sutton has suggested to the Daily Mail that he thinks Manchester City could be looking to sign reported Manchester United target Kalidou Koulibaly in January.

Manchester United were heavily linked with Koulibaly over the summer, with the Times suggesting that Napoli wanted £90 million for the centre-back.

That price-tag appeared to put United off, but Sutton thinks City may well make a move for the Napoli man.

City have lost both John Stones and Aymeric Laporte to injury, which leaves their centre-back options looking thin.

Koulibaly helped Napoli pick up a victory over City’s title rivals Liverpool last night, and Sutton was impressed with the commanding defender’s display.

“Up against Salah again, Koulibaly will have wanted to prove a point,” he said.

“I wonder if Manchester City’s scouts were watching him, too, given their predicament at the back.

“The Senegal star has long been linked with a move to the Premier League. He’s 28 now and a supremely athletic, powerful player.

“Of course he’d cost a pretty penny, but he has all the attributes that a manager such as Pep Guardiola would want in a central defender.”

United would be highly unlikely to rival City for Koulibaly if Pep Guardiola’s side did move for him in January, as they spent big on Harry Maguire, who has started excellently at Old Trafford.

Koulibaly could definitely tighten up City’s defence if he was to arrive though, which they may need if they are to catch up with Liverpool.

City are already five points behind Jurgen Klopp’s men, with just five games played so far this season.
