Chris Sutton says West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice would sign for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool over Newcastle United if he had a choice.

The former striker was reacting to a Newcastle fan who wants his Champions League-chasing team to sign England duo James Maddison and Declan Rice in the summer.

The summer transfer window is going to be interesting because Eddie Howe’s side could be in the Champions League for next season, whilst those on Merseyside could miss out on that top-four finish.

If that happens, then you would imagine that those so-called top players would pick the St James’ Park club rather than the Reds because they are going to be playing against the elite.

There is a lot of interest in Rice, including from the Premier League leaders Arsenal, who deem him a ‘real leader’, as reported by the Evening Standard in April.

Nonetheless, this is what Chris Sutton had to say to a Newcastle fan who wants his club to sign Rice and Maddison, as he told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport on 606.

“Rice and Maddison?” responded Sutton to the Newcastle fan. “It would be quite a good midfield. Where would that midfield take you, though?

On if Rice would go to Newcastle: “Do I think he would sign for Newcastle? Give us some options, though. There’s going to be more than just Newcastle United in for him.

“Manchester United? Newcastle? Liverpool? They are struggling for midfielders. I think if he had a choice, at this moment in time, then Declan Rice would probably go to Liverpool.”

RICE AND MADDISON EXPECTED TO MOVE

Both players are in the midst of a relegation battle and their first task will be to keep Leicester City and West Ham United up, respectively.

If they achieve that, then the talk will start about their futures and Rice and Maddison’s desires to move up a level.

Some rumours suggest that, regardless of who Tottenham appoint as their next manager, they want Maddison, but you have to question why he would pick Spurs over a thriving club like Newcastle, if he had a choice.
