Chris Sutton hasn’t been complimentary about Celtic’s Craig Gordon.

Craig Gordon of Celtic warm's up before their Betfred Cup Semi-Final between Hibernian and Celtic at Hampden Park on October 21, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Chris Sutton has written in his column for The Record that Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon deserves criticism for his ‘shocking’ mistake on Thursday.

Celtic lost 2-1 to Salzburg in the Europa League at the second goal was particularly farcical.

The 35-year-old goalkeeper tried to play the ball out of defence, but he was inexplicably intercepted by Fredrik Gulbrandsen who then tapped into an empty net.

Gordon, who had an excellent game apart from that moment of madness, is no stranger to a clanger after making quite a few for Celtic down the years.

And Sutton reckons that goalkeepers of his experience shouldn’t be making ‘schoolboy’ mistakes.

“Craig Gordon made some decent saves but the second goal was shocking – it was school boy stuff,” he wrote in The Record.

“There’s been too many of these daft mistakes and that one came at a crucial time when Celtic were looking to get back in to the game.”

Manager of Celtic Brendan Rodgers looks on during the Betfred Cup Semi-Final at Hampden Park on October 21, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Gordon turns 36 this month and although he doesn’t need instant replacing, Brendan Rodgers must look to the future and plan for his inevitable decline.

He only has a maximum of one or two years left at this level, and the Hoops boss really must start identifying long-term replacements.

They don’t need a new keeper in January, because Scott Bain is there in reserve if Gordon does it again, but a top-level stopper next summer would be fantastic.
