It’s nigh on impossible to defend Moyes at the moment, and few Sunderland fans will be riding to his rescue if another defeat befalls them next weekend.

Chris Sutton believes that Sunderland are already as good as relegated and that David Moyes will be put out of his misery if they fail to beat Hull City next weekend, as reported by the Chronicle.

The Black Cats have used up a number of lives with an improbable series of ‘Great Escapes’ in recent years, but the current campaign is already shaping up to be yet another season of misery and struggle on Wearside with Saturday’s 4-1 defeat to Arsenal meaning Moyes’ side are officially the worst in Premier League history after ten games.

Consequently, Sunderland are already seven points from safety with just over a quarter of the season behind them and Sutton believes they have no chance of mirroring their Houdini-esque survival acts with the Scotsman in the dugout.

“I’m not going to stand here and make a case for Sunderland,” Sutton said on BT Sport, as reported by The Chronicle.

“Two points from 10 games, they are relegated as far as I’m concerned.

“Next two games they’ve got Bournemouth and Hull and I think if David Moyes’ team don’t beat Hull then I think he’ll go.”

A number of supporters on Wearside will no doubt be nodding their heads in agreement, with the former Manchester United manager failing to inspire any kind of a performance befitting of the top flight so far.

Though Moyes continues to maintain that there are visible improvements in the team’s performances, the sight of a static defence standing dazed and confused as Arsenal cut through them at will at the Stadium of Light is not an unfamiliar one of late.

The in-form Gunners may be level on points at the top of the Premier League, but Sunderland’s abject defeat to Stoke City and their ability to somehow lose at home to Crystal Palace after going 2-0 up deep into the second half suggests that Moyes, a painful pessimist, is not the man to inspire another against-the-odds escape.

Another loss to fellow strugglers Hull in the coming weeks could spell the premature end for a manager whose stock continues to plummet by the game.
