Celtic have been linked to signing a right-back this month.

Manager of Celtic Brendan Rodgers looks on during the Betfred Cup Semi-Final at Hampden Park on October 21, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Chris Sutton has revealed to BT Sport that a number of right-backs have rejected the chance to join Celtic this month.

Celtic have been linked with a number of potential long-term replacements for Mikael Lustig, who turned 32 last month.

The Scottish Sun reported this week that Fernando Fonseca was a £2 million target, while more recently it was reported by Gazeta Wyborcza that Lech Poznan defender Robert Gumny was on Brendan Rodgers’s radar.

It remains to be seen whether this is an area that Rodgers strengthens, but Hoops legend Sutton claims that the Scottish Premiership leaders have been actively trying.

He said on BT Sport: “Celtic need a right-back. I believe they’ve been in for a couple who have turned them down, which is disappointing. I can’t reveal my sources.

“They have to [sign a right-back]. It would be hugely disappointing if they didn’t get one in.”

Sutton is spot-on. Signing a right-back needs to be top of the agenda from this point on.

As good as Lustig has been down the years, the Sweden international has shown signs of decline during the past 12 months and Rodgers needs other options.

The Northern Irishman has Anthony Ralston, who was Man of the Match against Airdrie last week, and Cristian Gamboa, but neither inspire confidence that they’re good enough to replace Lustig in the long term.
