Chris Sutton has told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club that Rangers midfielder John Lundstram is getting better and better after a “sticky start”. The Ibrox star produced a stunning display against Celtic.
Lundstram, 28, came into Sunday’s Scottish Cup semi-final against Celtic having played the entire 120 minutes against Braga in the Europa League on Thursday night. But he showed no signs of tiredness, as Rangers won.
The midfielder, signed on a free last summer from the Blades, clocked up another 102 minutes as Rangers secured a late win – thanks to Fashion Sakala’s late winner. A brilliant week for Rangers, and for Lundstram.
Speaking about the midfielder on Monday night, Celtic icon Sutton put rivalries aside to applaud the Gers midfielder. He says he has been impressed with Lundstram, and his improving form for Rangers.
“They dominated the middle of the park,” Sutton said, recalling Sunday’s win over Celtic. “Lundstram, who had a really sticky start at Rangers, is coming into good form now and they deserved the victory.”
Sutton on Lundstram: Rangers star now key to GVB’s reign
When Giovanni van Bronckhorst joined Rangers, he started veteran Steven Davis alongside Glen Kamara. But the return of Ryan Jack and the form of Lundstram has seen the duo replace Davis and Kamara in the starting XI.
Rightly so. Davis is now 37 and while a superb passer of the ball, he does not have the legs of his midfield competitors. Kamara’s form has been up and down, while Lundstram is becoming a real warrior, a leader.
Alongside James Tavernier, Connor Goldson, Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos when fit, Lundstram is emerging as one of the first names on the team sheet.
