Manchester City and Liverpool are going head-to-head for the Premier League title this season.
Chris Sutton suggested that Manchester City would have already had the league sewn up by now, had they beaten Liverpool to Virgil van Dijk’s signature last year, during a guest appearance on BBC Radio Five Live’s Monday Night Club (19:45).
City currently sit top of the pile, ahead of second placed Liverpool due to a superior goal difference, but Jürgen Klopp’s men do have a game in hand on Pep Gardiola’s side.
The Reds have shown some weaknesses during their last few games, having taken just five points from their previous three outings, whilst Manchester City have really cranked up the pressure, winning three consecutive Premier League games, scoring 11 goals and conceding just one.
Sutton believes that Guardiola’s men could have already wrapped up the league title, however, had they signed Liverpool ace Van Dijk last January.
He told BBC Radio Five Live’s Monday Night Club:
“City could have gone in for Van Dijk at one stage and they could have bought him, and they didn’t want to. Imagine had he gone to City, the league would be done now.”
City were in for the Dutchman, but eventually chose to step away from the deal after Liverpool made a £75 million bid.
Whilst Sutton has a point, he is clearly exaggerating, considering that there are still three months remaining until the season finishes.
