Chris Sutton believes that Derek McInnes was right to turn down the Sunderland job offer.
Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes
Former Celtic player and now turned football pundit, Chris Sutton, believes that Derek McInnes has made the right decision to turn down Sunderland’s job offer.
Sutton said that it is ‘ridiculous’ to criticize him for an apparent lack of ambition. Rather, the Aberdeen boss should be praised for making such a bold decision, he said.
According to him, Sunderland are in freefall, and David Moyes left the club for a reason. There is hardly anything attractive about the Black Cats at the moment.
Sutton has also criticized those who accuse McInnes of holding out for the Rangers job. The former Celtic player claimed that Derek has proved himself at Aberdeen and has earned the right to choose his next step.
He added that given his old connection with Rangers, the 45-year-old may fancy the Ibrox job. Sutton also suggested that being an ambitious manager, McInnes would also fancy high profile managerial jobs at Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Celtic as well.
Recently, Rangers manager, Pedro Caixinha, made a comment that McInnes wanted his job. Sutton severely criticized the Rangers manager, saying he should be focusing on his own job and winning football matches than focusing on McInnes’ career.

“Some accuse him of holding out for the Rangers job. What absolute utter nonsense. Derek is a manager who has proved himself at Aberdeen and has earned the right to pick and choose his next step,” wrote Sutton for the Daily Record.
“Further down the line with his Rangers connection he may well fancy the Ibrox job. But I would suggest as an ambitious young manager he would also fancy the Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Celtic jobs as well.
“And as for to Pedro Caxhina’s comment last season that Derek wanted his job.
“Well, I’ve never understood managers who look behind them and comment on other guys wanting their job. If Pedro is successful at Ibrox he will be in the job as long as he wants. So he would be better served worrying about the job in hand and winning football matches rather than Derek McInnes’s future in management.”
