Celtic’s Craig Gordon
Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon was fortunate to escape without a red card after a high challenge outside the box against Alloa.
The stopper was handed a booking and went onto keep a clean sheet as Celtic won the Betfred Cup quarter-final 2-0.
Gordon’s challenge occurred in the first half with the game goalless.
Chris Sutton – Celtic
Former star Chris Sutton told BT Sport’s live coverage of the fixture that he feels it was a terrible decision from Gordon to leave his penalty area, and an illustration of how is not comfortable in his game.
He said: “His confidence is shot to pieces, we saw it late on with his clearances, he is not making good deisions. Who Brendan Rodgers plays at the weekend, I couldn’t tell you.”
Responding to manager Brendan Rodgers’ comments that Gordon was in a good starting position to come out and clear the ball, Sutton said: “It doesn’t matter if his starting position is good, that is a rubbish decision from Craig Gordon.
“He is endangering an opponent, its a kung fu kick.”
Celtic’s Craig Gordon
Sutton has previously been critical of new signing Dorus de Vries, who has recently supplanted Gordon in the starting XI, but conceded seven goals in last week’s Champions League defeat to Barcelona.
Gordon was number one last season and while Brendan Rodgers likes his goalkeepers to be adept with their feet and come and clear the ball, at 33 he is not the most mobile, and last night’s incident was an illustration of this.
