The Celtic legend has reacted to news that the Glasgow Rangers man has returned to the Ibrox club.

Rangers midfielder Joey Barton is set to return to “full-time training” following his lengthy ban by the club.

The 34-year-old has not kicked a ball for Rangers since the 5-1 defeat at Celtic on September 10, after which he was embroiled in a training-ground row with team-mate Andy Halliday and manager Mark Warburton.

The former Premier League man was initially slapped with a three-week suspension, but his absence had dragged on until Wednesday when Rangers confirmed he would return.

Given that his suspension was extended and then prolonged, it plunged his long-term career at Ibrox into serious doubt and some questioned whether the fiery midfielder – a Bosman signing in the summer – would ever play for Rangers again.

That may still be the case.

It remains to be seen whether Barton – who will train with the Gers’ youth team – will ever play for Warburton again, or whether the return is merely linked to maintaining his fitness ahead of a January exit.

The ex-Newcastle and Man City man has started five Premiership games for Warburton’s side this season, with the Glasgow giants sitting second in the table – nine points adrift of Celtic, who have a game in hand.
