Celtic winger James Forrest started this evening’s win over San Marino on the bench for Scotland.

James Forrest of Celtic celebrates his goal (Celtics 1st)with Stuart Armstrong during the Betfred Cup Final at Hampden Park on November 26, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Chris Sutton has said on Twitter it’s a ‘joke’ that Scotland boss Alex McLeish dropped Celtic winger James Forrest today.

McLeish’s side bounced back from Thursday’s horrendous 3-0 defeat in Kazakhstan by beating San Marino at the Stadio Olimpico.

The Scotland manager made six changes to his first XI for this evening and the Celtic star was among those who dropped out – a decision which didn’t go down well with Hoops legend Sutton.

It did seem an odd decision by McLeish, given Forrest’s record on international duty.

Earlier this season, the Celtic star netted five goals across two games for the Scots – against Albania and Israel respectively.

They weren’t against stellar opposition, but he still became the first Celtic player to score a hat-trick for Scotland in 110 years.

San Marino, officially the worst ranked team in the world, managed to only trail by one goal at half-time, which was scored by Kenny McLean after four minutes.

Forrest replaced Stuart Armstrong on 71 minutes as the visitors only won 2-0 in the end.
