The Scottish League Cup has taken on a new format this year with a protracted group stage which began in early July.

This led to the quarter-finals being played last night as Rangers took on Queen of the South.

The knives were out for Rangers and manager Mark Warburton after the sorry Joey Barton saga which saw him suspended, a week after their 5-1 loss to Celtic.

Very few people have been more outspoken about Rangers’ recent shortcomings than pundit Chris Sutton, the former Celtic forward.

After Rangers thumped their opponents 5-0, Sutton took to Twitter to applaud the Gers.

He was critical of midfielder Harry Forrester, who he says should have been red carded during the contest.

Asked about Mark Warburton, Sutton said that he regarded his job as ‘safe for now’, and elaborated on his Forrester.

Rangers’ next fixture comes away to Aberdeen, a game which promises to be a lot tougher than last night’s challenge.
