Birger Meling fired the Norwegian visitors ahead on 15 minutes, but goals from Odsonne Edouard and Olivier Ntcham either side of the half-time whistle flipped the game on its head.
Edouard, an £8 million signing by Celtic this summer, then added a second with 15 minutes to go as Brendan Rodgers’s side established daylight in the tie.
The Hoops have a two-goal advantage ahead of next week’s return leg, but the away goal means that a 2-0 victory on the night would see Rosenborg progress into the third round of qualifiers.
Rodgers’s side still have plenty of work to do – a sentiment echoed by Chris Sutton at full time.
Moussa Dembele, arguably the Hoops’ best player, was missing with a hamstring injury and Edouard certainly stepped up on the big occasion.
Some eyebrows were raised after Rodgers spent a club-record fee on him in June, having only netted 11 goals during his loan from Paris Saint-Germain last season, but it’s looking like a shrewd investment already.
