Former Celtic player and now a popular football pundit, Chris Sutton, says that Patrick Roberts is a fantastic signing for the club.

The 20-year-old joined the Bhoys on a season-long loan from Manchester City.

The highly rated winger spent 18 months with Celtic before moving back to his parent club at the end of last season.

He scored 15 goals in all competitions last season and helped Celtic win the Scottish treble.

The Scottish Sun reported earlier this week that Celtic were willing to break their transfer record with a £8 million offer to sign Roberts, but Pep Guardiola changed his mind at the last minute.

He decided that it would be best for the youngster to move out on loan again, but there’s every chance that the Celtic board will try again next summer to keep the player.

Sutton says that Roberts “is a fantastic signing” and an “outstanding addition” who will add real creativity to the side.

He adds that getting Roberts is like signing a £10 million player, and he is probably worth an even bigger valuation.

“Patrick Roberts is a fantastic signing. Managing to get him back adds real creativity to the side,” wrote Sutton in his column for The Daily Record.

“I said a couple of weeks ago it was like signing a £10 million player, but given the fees paid out for some dross this week, it’s probably worth an even bigger valuation.

“I’m not sure the whole PR7 marketing campaign isn’t a bit over the top, but that’s the modern game.

“Bottom line is he’s an outstanding addition to the squad and Rodgers was able to supplement that deal with a move for a third striker.”
