Consequently, the Northern Irish manager paired right-back Mikael Lustig with Dedryck Boyata and the Swede looked a tame replacement for Simunovic.

Celtic’s problems at centre-half date back to the summer when Rodgers was pairing centre-midfielder Nir Bitton with the Croat in central defence due to injuries to Boyata and Erik Sviatchenko.

And Chris Sutton has appeared to criticise the former Liverpool boss for not acting to solve this weakness when the transfer window was open.

Celtic are back in action on Saturday when Rodgers’s side square off with Hibernian in a Scottish League Cup semi-final at Hampden Park.
