Graeme Murty has reportedly stepped down at Ibrox after two recent Rangers losses to Old Firm rivals Celtic.
Celtic icon Chris Sutton has defended Graeme Murty following his reported decision to leave Rangers, just two days after the Gers suffered a huge 5-0 loss to Celtic.
The 43-year-old saw the pressure and criticism intensify on his shoulders following two heavy defeats to Old Firm rivals Celtic in the Gers’ last three games – losing 4-0 in the Scottish Cup semi-final and 5-0 in the league on Sunday.
Doubts had already surrounded the future of Murty, with chairman Dave King only giving the 43-year-old the job until the end of the season as Pedro Caixinha’s successor.
But Sky Sports reported that Murty had left his position as manager, and Sutton reacted on Twitter by emphasising his sympathy for the former Reading defender though does believe that Murty made mistakes.
Murty has failed to stop Celtic from closing in on a second successive treble, after the Hoops held aloft their seventh consecutive league title on Sunday by beating Rangers.
It remains unclear if Murty will return to Ibrox as Under-20’s manager – the position he held with the Scottish giants before becoming manager – or indeed he will leave the club to look for pastures new.
