Chris Sutton explains why Celtic are unable to succeed in European competitions.

Chris Sutton has told BT Sport that Celtic’s main problem in Europe is that they cannot compete financially with some of the biggest clubs.

The former Celtic striker made the comments before the Bhoys’ Scottish Premiership clash against St. Mirren away from home on Friday.

“I think it is very important that he (Celtic manager Ronny Deila) keeps hold of his best players in the summer,” Sutton told BT Sport.

“Virgil (Van Dijk) is a big player for Celtic. The problem Celtic have in Europe is financially they just can’t compete.

“They can’t compete with the English Premier League clubs down south, but Celtic is a Champions League club in stature and that’s where all the fans want to be.”

Celtic are the biggest club of Scotland, but in Europe, they have struggled consistently over the years.

In fact, manager Ronny Deila could not even get the Bhoys past the qualifiers and into the group stage of the 2014-15 campaign.

As Sutton so correctly points out, Celtic cannot compete financially with the biggest clubs of Europe and cannot attract the best players.

Moreover, the Scottish Premiership is not one of the elite teams in Europe, which makes it tough for Celtic to attract the best players.

The Premiership is also not the most competitive of domestic leagues in Europe, which means it tough for players to raise their game when playing against the top teams in the Champions League.
