Former Celtic and Chelsea striker Chris Sutton has named Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Virgil van Dijk as the three best central defenders in the Premier League on social networking site Twitter.
Sutton seems to the rate Tottenham duo Alderweireld and Vertonghen, and Southampton centre-back Van Dijk highly.
It is hard to argue against Sutton’s assertion regarding Alderweireld and Vertonghen.
The Tottenham duo have formed a formidable partnership in defence and are arguably the two best centre-backs in the Premier League.
The two Belgium internationals compliment each other perfectly, and their partnership was a key reason behind Spurs’ third-placed finish in the Premier League during the 2015-16 campaign.
Van Dijk is also a brilliant defender and has been superb for Southampton since joining them from Scottish giants Celtic in the summer of 2015.
However, some could argue that there are better centre-backs than the Netherlands international in the Premier League, Arsenal’s Laurent Koscielny for example.
Tottenham are fifth in the Premier League table at the moment, while Southampton are currently 12th in the standings.
