Celtic have enjoyed a sensational season winning both the League Cup and the Scottish Premiership.

Chris Sutton has told the Daily Record that despite the contributions that the likes of Stuart Armstrong and Moussa Dembele have made this term, Scott Brown has to be considered Celtic’s player of the season.

The Hoops have enjoyed a brilliant year under Brendan Rodgers. With the Scottish Cup semi-final on the horizon, the Bhoys have already won the League Cup and have wrapped up the Scottish Premiership title, with an unbeaten domestic season still a real possibility.

Unsurprisingly therefore, there are a number of players who probably deserve the accolade of player of the season, but former Celtic striker Sutton has backed the side’s midfield general for the honour.

“There are a few candidates for Celtic player of the year but for me it has to be the captain,” he told the Record.

“I love a good comeback tale and Brown has been the story of the season for me. Think back to that Old Firm semi-final and everyone had written him off.

“He was over the hill, finished, Andy Halliday had him in his back pocket, apparently.

“Brown shut up his critics by being the driving force for this side this season. Sinclair, Dembele and Armstrong will get a lot of the plaudits, and understandably so, but for me the skipper has been the main man.”

As Sutton alluded to, some were definitely starting to doubt Brown’s capabilities to inspire the side following his form when he was rushed back early from injury last season and struggled to make an impact during the latter stages of Ronny Deila’s tenure.

However, Rodgers’ arrival and the formation of his partnership with Armstrong in the middle of the park has seemingly given the 31-year-old a new lease of life at Parkhead, and it would surely be a mistake to suggest that he could not still be a stalwart of the Hoops midfield for a number of years to come.
