Former Celtic star Chris Sutton has insisted to the Daily Mail that Moussa Dembele still has a lot to learn, despite his Old Firm derby hat-trick.

The striker joined Brendan Rodgers’ side in a move from Championship side Fulham this summer, after scoring 17 goals in all competitions for the Cottagers last season.

He has arrived as back-up to first choice forward Leigh Griffiths but showed his quality on Saturday with a superb hat-trick in the 5-1 win over Rangers.

It has sparked suggestions he should replace his more experienced teammate in the starting XI, but Sutton insists he still has plenty of work to do on his game.

“I still think Dembele still has a lot to learn and he’d say that himself,” he told the Daily Mail.

“There is a rawness about him but what’s impressive is he has his moments. I really like the look of him but he needs a lot of work. That’s what he’s here for.”

Dembele will now be hoping he gets his chance to continue his development in the Celtic first-team this season.

Griffiths is the undisputed number one given the goals he has scored over the last few years, but the Frenchman showed his quality in this comprehensive derby win.

He is set to start against Barcelona in the Champions League in midweek and a positive display there could see the Scottish striker fighting for his place instead.
