Chris Sutton has shared a theory on Twitter as to why Patrick Roberts does not earn more first-team starts for Celtic.
The Manchester City loanee starred in Wednesday’s 4-0 win at Ross County by scoring once and grabbing two assists in the rout.
It was only the 19-year-old’s second Premiership start since Brendan Rodgers replaced Ronny Deila at Parkhead in the summer.
And it is possible that Rodgers only played him to rest some prominent members of the squad following a tiresome last seven days, including a Champions League defeat by Borussia Monchengladbach and a League Cup win over Rangers at Hampden Park.
Now, former Celtic striker Sutton has suggested on Twitter that he believes Rodgers has concerns about the teenager’s defensive application, which he feels explains his lack of first XI appearances this season.
It is clear that Roberts is a very, very fine talent and there is plenty of time for him to iron out the perceived creases in his game.
Deila, who brought him on an 18-month loan from City, used him regularly toward the end of last term, so Celtic fans know precisely what kind of magic he is capable of, and they will hope to see it on a regular basis incase this proves his last season with the Hoops.
