Chris Sutton handed out some sympathy to Rangers star Aaron Ramsey during commentary on Premier Sports on Sunday afternoon – as the Ibrox ace came off injured against Celtic. Josh Windass also commented.

Ramsey, 31, lasted 80 minutes against Braga in the Europa League on Thursday night – with many of Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s players clocking up 120 minutes. On Sunday, they were forced to go again.

Perhaps, given Ramsey’s injury woes, he was a surprise starter against Celtic but only lasted 43 minutes – as Rangers went on to win 2-1 after extra-time. He was replaced by Scott Wright; the extent of the injury unknown.

A curling effort from Scott Arfield and Fashion Sakala’s extra-time winner saw Rangers cancel out Greg Taylor’s opener. Sutton reacted during commentary – while ex-Rangers attacker Windass praised the Welshman.

“There has been a lot of talk about his signing, but he simply has not had enough minutes in a Rangers jersey. Such a talented player,” Sutton said, during his co-commentary role alongside Rory Hamilton on Premier Sports.

Sutton, Windass on Ramsey: Rangers desperately need him fit

With Ramsey on the pitch, Rangers were much the better side. His ability to lose his marker and find pockets of space in between the lines has been eye-catching during his loan – which has been full of ups and downs so far.

A couple of goals, and his performance against Braga – declared his best in a Rangers shirt by Owen Hargreaves – are certainly highs. Van Bronckhorst needs him fit, as we enter the latter stages of the season.

Ramsey now has an entire week to rest before Rangers are next in action, facing Motherwell on Sunday. But then, it is a huge Europa League semi-final clash against RB Leipzig. Rangers will need Ramsey for that game.
