However, according to the former Chelsea striker, the Gunners should aim for the fifth place, as that could see them finish in the Champions League places due to the ban on Manchester City.
As reported by BBC Sport, City have been banned for two years from European football by UEFA, but they have appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Sutton has also praised the impact that Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta has made on the team.
Sutton wrote in The Daily Mail: “Arsenal won’t finish inside the top four but because of Manchester City’s European ban, they can go for fifth and that feels a more realistic target.
“Mikel Arteta was appointed six months ago and before the break, we saw changes in their style. There was a bit of steel about them. But they will require a hell of a run to finish fifth or higher.”
Top-four or top-five possible for Arsenal?
Arsenal have a good team, but the Gunners do need to step up their game if they are to finish in the top four or the top five of the Premier League table this season.
The Gunners are as low as ninth in the standings now, eight points behind fourth-placed and London rivals Chelsea and five points behind fifth-placed Manchester United.
If Arteta’s side hit the ground running when the season resumes and pick up wins, then they could sneak into the top four.
