The BBC pundit believes the Everton boss has backed himself into a corner by spending so big at Goodison Park.

BBC 5 Live pundit Chris Sutton thinks Marco Silva and Everton should have had a far better start to the season given the money that’s been spent on his squad.

It’s fair to say that the Toffees boss is under a fair bit of pressure at Goodison Park right now after just two wins from his side’s opening six English Premier League fixtures.

A home defeat to top-flight new boys Sheffield United at the weekend has left some fans seriously questioning the direction the club are heading in.

Sutton feels that the pressure has come in part due to the team being so expensively assembled on the back of a year’s adjustment period for Silva at the club.

As quoted by BBC 5 Live, the top-flight winner said: “Everton have had a gentle start to the season.

“Silva’s biggest problem is the fact that he’s now gone out and spent over £100m. Everton fans would have been looking at the fixtures and thought, ‘we should have got off to a far better start.’

“Sheffield United thoroughly deserved to win the game, it wasn’t a fluke, they were the better team.

“So when you spend money and you assemble the most expensive Everton squad that’s ever been assembled, and he’s had a season’s grace… they’re not getting a silver service are they?”

Not getting any easier

Currently in 14th place, just three points clear of the relegation zone, it’s clear that Silva needs to inspire improvement over their next six games or difficult decisions may have to be made by the Everton hierarchy.

The problem is that run of matches isn’t any easier than their opening six games which, as Sutton pointed out, were mostly all winnable.

After tonight’s League Cup fixture they host red hot Manchester City before a tricky away trip to Burnley. With West Ham, Brighton and Spurs to navigate after that, a big uptick in form is required.

Can Silva turn things around and show supporters there’s life in the expensive outfit he’s taken time to build?
