Celtic signed 19-year-old striker Odsonne Edouard on a season-long loan from Paris Saint-Germain, with an option to buy the player, on the transfer deadline day.

The French forward is a highly talented player and was player of the tournament and top scorer at the 2015 Euro Under-17s.

He scored eight times at the 2015 Under-17s Euros, including a hat-trick in the final against Germany, but hasn’t featured in the senior team at PSG.

Former Celtic player and now football pundit, Chris Sutton, says that Edouard offers an extra option to the squad if either of Leigh Griffiths or Moussa Dembele gets injured.

Sutton says that both Griffiths and Dembele haven’t had great records with injuries in recent months, and therefore it was important to have a strong cover.

It also means that Rodgers won’t have to use players like Tom Rogic and James Forrest up front, who are not used to the role.

Sutton says that when fit Griffiths and Dembele will start, but getting a solid cover shows a proper plan has been put in place by the Bhoys.

“Odsonne Edouard gives the extra option the squad needed should anything happen to Leigh Griffiths or Moussa Dembele,” writes Sutton in his column for the Daily Record.

“Eduardo’s arrival does pose one question, mind you. Rodgers went on record to say that it was tough to keep two top-level strikers happy and that is not going to be aided by the signing of this lad.

“You’d assume he’s come here to play through his loan deal, but the reality might be a bit different.

“If Grifffiths or Dembele are fit, surely they will start, but getting the cover is good planning and there is no doubt that the offensive area of the squad is looking strong and could cause damage in the Champions League and on the home front.”
