Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton ripped into Rangers’ nightmare Europa League defeat to Progres Niederkorn, labelling it ‘totally embarrassing’.

This was supposed to be the dawn of a new era at Rangers, and while manager Pedro Caixinha talks a good game, his team did not play like a good team this evening.

They headed into the Europa League qualifying match 1-0 up after Kenny Miller’s goal at Ibrox, but they lost the second leg in Luxembourg 2-0, to crash out 2-1 on aggregate, with their new signings failing to gel.

Sutton is an outspoken critic of Rangers, and it was only a matter of time before he reacted to their humiliating loss.

Referencing recent comments from manager Pedro Caixinha about banning green ‘Celtic’ boots, Sutton said that the manager needs to start concentrating on the football.

Caixinha certainly has plenty to work on, and being able to ‘focus on domestic competition’ is of little solace right now.

The Europa League was supposed to be the highlight of Rangers’ season. Now it is over before the campaign has even hit mid-July.

This is a disaster for Rangers financially as well as from a sporting sense, and Pedro Caixinha might well be looking over his shoulder if further results go against them.
