RedBull Salzburg produced a sensational display in their first ever knockout clash against Bayern Munich. Leeds target Brenden Aaronson played, and Chris Sutton gave an exciting verdict during commentary on BT Sport.
Salzburg are shining under the guidance of 33-year-old manager Matthias Jaissle, qualifying for the knockout rounds for the first ever time in the Champions League. They took the lead, through Chukwubuike Adamu.
Played in on the left of the penalty area, he curled a first-time effort past Sven Ulreich. It took Bayern until the 90th minute to find an equaliser, Kingsley Coman getting the goal – finishing neatly at the back post.
It gives Julian Nagelsmann’s side a slight advantage, though Salzburg will be proud. Aaronson had a neat turn and shot in the first half, and Sutton was impressed. He said, on BT Sport: “Terrific feet, clever, great awareness.”
Sutton on Aaronson: Champions League will intensify Leeds interest
Aaronson was excellent. Of course, in January, the USA international was the subject of huge interest from Leeds – with the Athletic reporting that two bids of £15million and £20million were tabled for the midfielder.
Salzburg chose to keep him. They wanted him to remain until the summer, giving them every chance of a Bayern upset and another league title. But in the summer, Leeds are likely to chance their arm again.
Judging by his display, and Sutton’s verdict, Leeds will be more interested than ever in the hard-working midfielder.
