Celtic extended McGregor’s contract on Thursday afternoon.

Callum McGregor of Celtic holds off Gary Mackay-Steven of Aberdeen during the Betfred Cup Final between Celtic and Aberdeen at Hampden Park on December 2, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Chris Sutton has applauded Celtic’s decision to hand midfielder Callum McGregor a new contract on Thursday afternoon, but urged Brendan Rodgers to do more in the January transfer window.

McGregor, 25, put pen to paper on a new contract that will see him remain with the Scottish champions until the summer of 2023. In reaction to the new deal, he claimed he wants to be a one-club Celtic man.

Certainly, the left-footed star has shown just how important he is to Celtic this season, offering versatility from his previous number 10 role to cover captain Scott Brown in defensive midfield.

Former Celtic striker Sutton stated his delight at McGregor earning a new deal, but wants more to be done in the window in terms of bringing new players to Parkhead with the club light in certain areas.

McGregor has featured in every single one of Celtic’s 35 league and cup outings this season, and has 200 appearances under his belt for the Hoops since his debut in August 2014.

Celtic need signings in January, as Sutton states. Indeed, a new striker is required to cover the loss of Leigh Griffiths, while Odsonne Edouard has also suffered an injury. A winger could also be on the agenda.

McGregor is expected to start for Celtic once again on Saturday afternoon, as the Hoops play host to Dundee at Parkhead.
