Chris Sutton has defended the suggestion that Kyle Walker did ‘nothing’ at Tottenham Hotspur prior to his transfer to the all-dominant Manchester City.

It has been six years since Kyle Walker left Spurs for £45 million (BBC Sport) to join the rampant trophy-winning train of Manchester City, but it was suggested to Chris Sutton that prior to the right-back’s arrival, he did ‘nothing’ at his previous club.

This was in reference to how Pep Guardiola has vastly improved the players at Manchester City, including Walker, but Sutton added it was ‘harsh’ on Tottenham, even though they don’t win anything, he did well at the club, as he told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport on 606.

Walker was just starting to make a name for himself in the Premier League when Mauricio Pochettino entered the building and took the club to the high height of the Champions League.

His call to head for the exit door has proven to be a masterstroke because he has now won the lot at the Etihad, including winning a historic Treble on Saturday after Manchester City beat Inter in the Champions League final.

Nonetheless, this is what Sutton had to say when a supporter suggested that Walker ‘did nothing’ at his previous club.

“That’s a bit harsh ‘doing nothing at Tottenham’,” said Sutton. “I think they signed him for £50 million.

On Walker not winning anything at Spurs: “But nobody ever does at Tottenham (win anything).”

Walker one of England’s best

When the dust has settled, the 33-year-old will go down as one of the best fullbacks the English game has ever seen.

For Micah Richards, a former Manchester City right-back himself, he thinks Walker is ‘one of the best ever’ period.

And, in truth, he isn’t wrong because he has stepped up in the big games, like against Real Madrid recently, as well as winning the lot on the domestic stage.
