Rangers have signed Defoe on loan from Premier League club Bournemouth in the January transfer window.
The 36-year-old former West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur striker has moved to Steven Gerrard’s Ibrox club on an 18-month loan deal.
Former Celtic striker Sutton believes that fans of the Bhoys would have been glad if manager Brendan Rodgers had signed Defoe.
Sutton, who now works as a pundit for BBC Sport and BT Sport, has defended his comments on Twitter.
Sutton told The Scottish Sun about Defoe: “I know some Celtic fans have said that he’s getting on a bit. But if Defoe had signed for Celtic, I think they would be putting a statue up to him outside.”
Defoe is a proven goalscorer, and there is no doubt that Rangers fans are delighted with manager Gerrard being able to sign the striker in the January transfer window.
Celtic could have done with a striker of Defoe’s quality, but given that he is in his mid-30s, maybe it is better for the Glasgow giants that they did not try to sign him this month.
