Former Celtic player-turned-pundit Chris Sutton has heavily criticized Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha after the Gers lost 2-0 to Celtic in the Old Firm derby on Saturday.

He said that the defeat clearly underlines the “enormous gulf” between the two Glasgow sides.

Caixinha made a statement in the summer that his Rangers squad is the best in Scotland. Sutton didn’t waste this opportunity to aim a dig at him, saying that his “best squad is a squad low on quality”.

The former Blackburn player said that having belief in the squad is one thing but telling the players that they’re the best could lose the effect, especially when his side is being outplayed by the Champions.

It was an one-sided contest, and Celtic played them off the park.

Sutton pointed out some interesting statistics like the fact that Brendan Rodgers has now won as many league games at Ibrox as Caixinha this season.

He also added that the Rangers manager has spent more money than Celtic in the summer.

Rangers have slipped to fifth the Scottish Premier table, and find themselves eight points behind Celtic already.

“Pedro’s best squad is a squad low on quality on the weekend evidence,” wrote Sutton in his column for The Daily Record.

“Having belief in his group of players is fine but to keep telling them they are the best must be losing its effect when their biggest rivals can turn up and treat playing at Ibrox like a home game.

“Celtic are as comfortable going there as at any time in their history. There isn’t a fear factor. It doesn’t matter if it’s Mark Warburton or Pedro Caixinha.

“Pedro has talked his team up a lot and of course I can understand why he’s tried to do that. He’s made bold statements but in the first gladiatorial test of the season, with virtually everything in their favour, he failed.

“You can cut Pedro some slack for last season but he’s made a lot of big statements since he came to Scotland and all that talk counts for nothing.”
