Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has strongly criticised Rangers forward Kyle Lafferty in The Daily Record.

Sutton was not impressed with the performance of Lafferty for Rangers against Celtic away from home at Celtic Park in the Scottish Premiership last weekend.

The 30-year-old Northern Ireland international forward started the Old Firm derby and played for the entire 90 minutes, as Steven Gerrard’s side lost 1-0.

Former Celtic striker Sutton has criticised Lafferty’s performance for Rangers against the Hoops, and has also slammed his subsequent comments about challenging for the Scottish Premiership title.

Lafferty – who cost Rangers £500,000 in transfer fees to sign from Scottish Premiership rivals Heart of Midlothian, as reported by The Glasgow Evening Times – was quoted as saying by The Daily Record that the Gers can challenge Celtic for the league title this season.

Sutton wrote in The Daily Record: “There’s nothing wrong with having belief, or even quiet confidence in the dressing room, but coming away with these comments in public only leave you wide open again.

“The fact that it’s him coming out with this stuff is even more laughable given his performance in the Old Firm game last week.

“Lafferty was completely anonymous at Celtic Park. Hopeless even. He was meant to be a big game player but he and Alfredo Morelos never got a sniff.”

Challenging for the title

Celtic are the best team in Scotland, and the win against Rangers at Celtic Park underlined their quality and depth.

Rangers can give the Hoops a run for their money this season, but the Gers need to put together a run of positive results in the Scottish Premiership after the international break.
