Celtic’s Leigh Griffiths was in the thick of things in Belfast on Friday night.
Speaking on BT Sport, Chris Sutton has criticised striker Leigh Griffiths for tying a Celtic scarf to one of posts after Friday night’s fiery win over Linfield at Windsor Park.
Celtic took a big step toward the next round of Champions League qualifiers by beating the Northern Irish side 2-0 in Belfast earlier in the week.
Goals from Scott Sinclair and Tom Rogic did the damage for Brendan Rodgers’s side on what was a hostile night in Belfast.
The match was rescheduled to July 14 to avoid such a fixture coinciding with the Orange Order marches and Twelfth of July celebrations in the Northern Irish city, with Celtic being from a predominantly Catholic background and Linfield being traditionally protestant.
Consequence of the religious undertones, there was a bit of hassle from the home fans who pelted coins and glass bottles at Griffiths at one point in the second half, after the Hoops hitman seemingly made a ‘5-1’ reference with both of his hands.
At full time, the 26-year-old tied a Celtic scarf to one of the posts in a gesture which angered the home support further, and Sutton believes he was “out of order” and diminished the fact that Griffiths was booked after removing the missles from the pitch.
“I have to say at the end of the game Leigh Griffiths was provocative tying a scarf to the post, that was out of order, but the bigger picture is that it’s shocking and I hope that yellow card gets rescinded because that could affect Celtic down the line.”
