Tottenham Hotspur’s off-field problems are seemingly playing their part in their poor start to the season.

BBC Sport pundit Chris Sutton has been critical of Mauricio Pochettino and suggested that he is making a mistake following his recent comments about his Tottenham squad.

Following Spurs’ defeat to Newcastle over the weekend, Pochettino claimed that his squad is ‘unsettled’ with the future of a number of his players being questioned, as quoted by Sky Sports.

The European transfer window slams shut on September 2 and Spurs need to sort out their squad before it affects their season as a whole.

Speaking to the Monday Night Club on BBC Radio 5 Live (26/08/2019 at 7:20 pm), former striker Sutton is perplexed as to why Pochettino is coming out with his recent comments.

“What can he gain though by saying that?” Sutton asked on BBC Radio 5 Live. “By saying that they’re ‘unsettled’. I just don’t understand why three games in he’s being [like this].

“Last summer it was ‘we need players in’. This summer he has brought players in, players who he wanted in, so why say it? What can be gained?

“You [to a Spurs fan] were in a Champions League final four games ago. And now within three games, it’s panic stations. It doesn’t need to be like this.”

Tottenham cannot allow their current off-the-field situations to dwell on too long because they do have a Premier League encounter to contest on Sunday.

The game will be against Arsenal and if Spurs can secure the win then it will surely lift the gloom that is currently around Spurs’ squad.

But a defeat against their North London neighbours will only make things worse for Pochettino and his players.
