Chris Sutton said on BBC Radio 5 Live on Monday evening (7:17pm, January 18, 2021) that he does not think that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp trusts Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri.
The former Chelsea striker, who now works as a pundit for BBC Sport, made the comments while discussing Liverpool’s lack of goals in recent games and the disappointing form of Roberto Firmino.
Sutton acknowledged that winger Shaqiri started against Manchester United at Anfield in the Premier League at the weekend, but he still thinks that Klopp does not have trust in the Switzerland international.
Sutton said on BBC Radio 5 Live on Monday evening (7:17pm, January 18, 2021): “I think there are other things like Jota who was a really good piece of business and whether the trust maybe hasn’t been for the likes of Origi. I know Xhaqiri started yesterday, but the fact of the matter is Jurgen Klopp doesn’t have faith in his fringe players, if you like, and losing Jota was a big deal.”
Does Chris Sutton have a point?
Origi has played just 13 minutes in the Premier League and has made three appearances in the Champions League for Liverpool so far this season, according to WhoScored.
It is clear that Klopp does not think that the Belgium international striker is good enough to start for his team.
The situation with Shaqiri is a bit different. Klopp has praised the former Stoke City star before and has pointed at his injury problems.
Moreover, Klopp preferred Shaqiri to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain against United at the weekend.
However, if Jordan Henderson and Fabinho were not playing in defence against the Red Devils and had lined up in midfield alongside Thiago instead, then Shaqiri would have been a substitute.
