Should Tottenham Hotspur ace Dele Alli be deployed in a deeper role in midfield like Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne this season?

Former Chelsea and Celtic striker Chris Sutton said on The Monday Night Club show on BBC Radio 5live on Monday evening (7pm, September 18, 2017) that it would be a waste to deploy Tottenham Hotspur star Dele Alli in a defensive midfield role.

Alli is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League and is one of the best young players in Europe.

The 21-year-old has progressed and developed massively since his move from Milton Keynes Dons to Tottenham.

The England international, though, has not made a great start to the 2017-18 campaign.

Although the youngster has scored two goals in five Premier League matches for Spurs so far this season, his overall performances have not been as good as they were last season.

Could Alli play better as a defensive midfielder, or if he is deployed deeper in midfield?

After all, despite being an attacking midfielder, 26-year-old Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne has played in a slightly deeper role so far this campaign and has done quite well.

Sutton does not believe that Alli should be played as a defensive midfielder, and said on The Monday Night Club show on BBC Radio 5live on Monday evening (7pm, September 18, 2017): “He has a wonderful habit of drifting into the box late from that number 10, so why would you waste someone who is such a talent, who is neither a defensive midfielder nor an attacking midfielder? He could play defensive midfield easily, he could stroll it. It’s a waste.”

“Why is all the negativity around Dele Alli again?” added Sutton. “He has been questioned. I don’t really understand it.”
