Chris Sutton says that Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers will struggle to sign a top striker.

Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton says that it will not be easy for Brendan Rodgers to sign a top striker in this summer market.

Celtic went into the Rosenborg game without their top two strikers – Moussa Dembele and Leigh Griffiths – and used Tom Rogic as the lone striker.

Sutton says that Celtic’s system of playing with one man up front makes it extremely difficult for Rodgers to keep two strikers happy at the same time.

Rodgers should have more strikers in his squad, and he probably wants another top quality player in the front line, but in truth, he cannot keep three strikers in his squad, and use all of them.

Sutton adds that not many strikers would like to come to Scotland and warm the bench behind Dembele and Griffiths.

Being a striker himself, Sutton understands that strikers don’t want to hang around the sidelines. Plus, Celtic do not have the luxury to keep a striker on a high wage package without giving him regular game time.

“Celtic play with one man up front and it’s extremely difficult keeping two guys happy,” wrote Sutton in his column for the Daily Record. “Keeping three sweet would be nigh impossible.

“Who is this third striker he’d be able to bring in anyway? You’re not going to get a top-quality front player who is going to come to Scotland and be happy to sit on the bench every week behind Dembele and Griffiths. It’s not going to happen.

“Any striker worth their salt wants to be on the pitch and the ones who would be happy to hang around the sidelines are not worth having.

“Some people will say, why not bring in a veteran striker, a guy who would accept not playing every week?

“Give me a name then. The game has changed. There are strikers on the bench in England getting £60,000 per week. Anyone who thinks that level of striker is going to pitch up at Parkhead on the cheap is living in fantasy land.”

Rodgers meanwhile says that Scottish Premier League is not competitive enough like other top European leagues, and as a result, he cannot afford the luxury of keeping three strikers.
