Chris Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live Sport that Jose Mourinho has basically told Carlos Vinicius that he is ‘rubbish’ after stating that the Tottenham summer signing is no Harry Kane.

Spurs recorded a 1-0 defeat to Brighton over the weekend, with Mourinho opting against starting his remaining available out-and-out striker, Vinicius.

Not only that, when Kane went off injured at half-time during Tottenham’s defeat to Liverpool, it was Erik Lamela who came on for the Englishman and not the new boy, who remained an unused sub.

Former Premier League winner Sutton thinks that Mourinho is throwing Vinicius ‘under the bus’ with his treatment and comments about the player.

“Yes, it was a surprise to me when he didn’t start the game,” said Sutton. “Son doesn’t seem so effective in that central striker role.

“They have to find a way of getting him chances. It’s interesting that Mourinho basically threw Vinicius under the bus, didn’t he?

“Saying that ‘he’s no Harry Kane, he cannot link-up and he cannot drop deep’. I wonder how Vinicius is feeling after hearing all that?

“He has basically told him that he’s rubbish, isn’t he? He is also making excuses that Spurs are a one-man team without Harry Kane that they cannot perform.”

Well, whilst Kane is nearing a return, he is set to miss Tottenham’s all-London affair against Chelsea on Thursday night.

It will be interesting to see what type of team Mourinho selects and whether Vinicius gets a shot from the off.

The eyes won’t only be on the Brazilian, but on a certain Gareth Bale also, who started at the Amex Stadium on Sunday and hasn’t started back-to-back matches since his return to North London.
