BBC Sport pundit Chris Sutton has hit out at ‘a section’ of the Newcastle United fans for their ‘negativity’ towards Steve Bruce as he urged them to ‘get a grip’ of themselves.

Newcastle have lost their opening two Premier League matches, including a worrying 3-1 defeat against Norwich City over the weekend.

Following Rafa Benitez’s departure, it is fair to say his exit didn’t sit well with the supporters and the appointment of Bruce on top of that just added fuel to the already toxic atmosphere.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live (19/08/2019 at 7:35 pm), former Premier League striker Sutton hit out at the supporters and urged them to back Bruce.

On whether he worries for Bruce’s future already: “What?!,” Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live. “Do I worry for his future after how many games? That’s absolutely ridiculous.

“I really feel sorry for Steve Bruce. When you look at the points from last season, I think they only had three points from their opening 10 games under Benitez. I think there’s a section of the Newcastle fans who need to get a grip of themselves and start backing the manager and not have this negativity.

“There was talk about Bruce being 11th choice. I don’t know whether that was the case, at all. But what about giving a manager a chance. How can you judge Bruce fairly after two games? That is utterly ridiculous. What purpose does it serve with these fans being negative? Bringing negativity into the stadium and booing the manager? I don’t get that after two games.”

Whilst the opening day defeat against Arsenal is understandable because it was against a team that is chasing Champions League football this term, the same can’t be said of the weekend.

Norwich were recently promoted to the Premier League, and it is fair to say that they, led by striker Teemu Pukki, dispatched Bruce’s side with ease.
