Tyrone Mings has been a rock for Aston Villa since he first joined in January.
Chris Sutton has claimed that Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings is just an ‘average’ Premier League defender as he brushed off claims that he is ‘superb’.
Whilst working for BBC Radio, one Villa supporter lauded Mings’ qualities at the back, and lablled the powerhouse as ‘superb’ despite the 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth at the weekend.
Dean Smith’s side have lost their opening two matches of the Premier League season, but it is fair to say that their centre-backs, Mings and Bjorn Engles have produced strong performances.
But speaking to BBC 606 on Radio 5 Live (17/08/2019), former striker Sutton stated that a player like Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk is ‘superb’, not Mings.
“He’s not superb though is he?,” Sutton said on BBC 606. “I mean he’s not top draw. Superb is Van Dijk. Tyrone Mings isn’t superb. He’s a sort of average Premier League defender.”
It has been a tough start for Villa, who in the main have produced strong performances, but they have been well and truly punished for their individual mistakes.
That was evident during Villa’s clash against Bournemouth on Saturday when goalkeeper Tom Heaton conceded a penalty within the first minute.
Then summer signing, Douglas Luiz, who was making his first start, allowed the ball to roll across the edge of the penalty area, with Harry Wilson pouncing and scoring via a deflection off Mings’ back.
