Neil Lennon took a big, big gamble ahead of Celtic’s Premiership game today.

The Hoops welcomed Motherwell to Parkhead in what was their first game since being dumped out of the Champions League by Hungarian minnows Ferencvaros in midweek.

Lennon took a lot of criticism for his team selection on that occasion, starting Ryan Christie, a midfielder, up front when he had Patryk Klimala and Albian Ajeti on the bench.

The Bhoys manager was already on record as saying that Ajeti wasn’t completely fit, but it was a poor reflection on Klimala – who never made it off the bench that night – that he wasn’t trusted to spearhead the attack.

And Lennon made the same decision again today, leaving Klimala and Ajeti on the bench despite the lack of an established number nine, but this time they ran out 3-0 winners.

But Sutton has claimed on Twitter that the young Pole – a £3.5 million signing in January – ‘must be rotten’ if he can’t make a first XI without a recognised striker.

In Lennon’s defence, he threw Klimala on for the second half and despite missing some cracking opportunities, the 22-year-old still gave a good account of himself.

He’ll be thinking about the chances he wasted, but the fact that he found himself in those positions in the first place is a big, big positive to take.
