Chris Sutton has slammed Willian’s performances for Arsenal this season in the Daily Mail and questioned why he was picked against Southampton at the weekend.

Arsenal were knocked out of the FA Cup by the Saints, with Mikel Arteta’s side failing to find their best.

Arteta rested many of Arsenal’s best performers in recent weeks, and the club’s fringe players once again failed to deliver.

Willian and Nicolas Pepe both struggled to produce, as Arsenal lost 1-0 on the south coast.

And Sutton said: “Why not start Kieran Tierney at Southampton? Why not start Emile Smith Rowe? Why not start Bukayo Saka? Why bring in Willian at No 10? The Brazilian has been about as useful as a chocolate teapot this season. Nicolas Pepe hasn’t been much better. He’s been more of a £72million problem than solution.”

Both Willian and Pepe have indeed underperformed this term, with their chances in Arteta’s starting line-up becoming more and more rare.

Willian, who is on a £220,000-a-week contract at the Emirates Stadium (Daily Mail), has barely even mustered up a shot let alone a goal during his time at Arsenal.

Pepe, meanwhile, has continued to fail to produce with any sort of consistency.

Arteta has already stated that Pepe faces an important few months at Arsenal and unless there is a dramatic up-turn in his performances between now and the end of the season, his place at the Emirates Stadium could be in doubt.
