Chris Sutton has ruined Sunderland on Twitter by describing Dylan McGeouch’s transfer from Scottish Premiership outfit Hibernian to the Stadium of Light as a “move backwards”.

McGeouch, 25, has joined Jack Ross’ new side after his contract at Easter Road expired at the end of the 2017-18 season, allowing the former St. Mirren manager to sign the Scotland international for nothing.

League One Sunderland confirmed they had completed the signing of McGeouch on Monday afternoon, posting the announcement on Twitter.

The former Celtic ace had reportedly drawn interest from the likes of Scottish Premiership giants Rangers, with the Northern Echo reporting that Steven Gerrard’s side had made a lucrative offer for McGeouch.

Instead, McGeouch has opted to move down south to Wearside and help Ross and Sunderland in their bid to return to the Championship after two successive relegations. But Sutton believes it is a step backwards for McGeouch.

McGeouch was one of the Scottish Premiership’s best central midfielders last season, making 31 appearances for Neil Lennon’s side in the league and helping Hibs finish in a more than respectable fourth place.
