Chris Sutton has backed Brendan Rodgers’ decision to reject a reported offer from Premier League side Fulham for defender Dedryck Boyata, stating they must upgrade first.

Rodgers was quoted by Sky Sports’ Transfer Centre (Tuesday, 13:37) as saying that Celtic had decided to turn down Fulham’s offer because “…it would be very difficult for us to replace him at this late stage”.

The Times had reported earlier this week that Slavisa Jokanovic’s free-spending Fulham had tabled an offer believed to be around the £9million mark for the Belgium international, but it has since been rejected.

Sutton reacted to the news that Celtic had rejected a bid for Boyata, and though he has been open about criticism over the former Manchester defender, he believes it was the right decision to keep him at Parkhead.

Boyata starred at the World Cup with Belgium, helping them reach the third-place play-off, where they beat England for s second time to finish in the top three behind Croatia and winners France.

The powerful defender has finally returned to Parkhead after being given a break following the end of the World Cup, which has since seen Kristoffer Ajer and Jack Hendry partner eachother at centre-back.

Boyata has entered the last 12 months of his contract and Celtic could now look to offer the defender a new contract, rather than losing him on a free next summer.
