Chris Sutton angrily slams Celtic for ‘scrambling’ in summer windows

Celtic endured a difficult summer transfer window before this season.

Pundit and former Celtic striker Chris Sutton has slammed the Bhoys for their transfer policy, as he told the Daily Record that he feels they are always ‘scrambling around’.

Celtic endured a difficult summer transfer window as they missed on a top target in John McGinn, and then sold striker Moussa Dembele to Lyon on deadline day in August.

Filip Benkovic and Youssouf Mulumbu arrived in the final hours of the window as Celtic were forced to do their business late, which seemed to play its part in a poor start to the campaign.

Celtic have hit their stride now, but it’s imperative that they don’t make the same mistakes in upcoming windows, especially as the club clearly have money to bring in new signings for Brendan Rodgers.

One of the keys for Celtic is the Champions League qualifiers. This past summer saw Celtic attempting to sign players around their qualifying games, and pundit Sutton has slammed them for that approach.

Sutton has told the Daily Record that ‘it’s no use’ Celtic attempting to do their business in July, as they should be signing players in January with the idea of getting them up to speed to start in those qualifiers.

Sutton urged Celtic to start a real recruitment drive in January rather than be ‘scrambling around’ in the summer – and it’s hard to really argue against his case, even if it is traditionally more difficult to sign players mid-season.

“We keep hearing how difficult a window January can be but this is when the Parkhead recruitment drive should be taking place – not in June,” said Sutton. “There’s a league to be won first but the Champions League qualifiers come around in July and now is the time to be building for those games.”

“Every year they seem to be scrambling around while the ties are taking place and it’s no use. Celtic need these players in right away, give them six months to find their feet and give them the chance to hit the ground running.
