Former Birmingham City pair Chris Sutton and Curtis Davies are among those to have reacted publicly to Harry Redknapp’s shock appointment by Blues.

Redknapp has taken the reins just hours after Gianfranco Zola’s resignation, which followed Monday’s 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Championship relegation rivals Burton Albion.

Birmingham were in seventh place and only three points off third when previous boss Gary Rowett was sacked in favour of Zola last December.

However, a run of just two wins in 22 league games has left the St Andrew’s outfit two places and three points above the relegation zone, leaving Redknapp three games in which to preserve his new side’s second-tier status.

Sutton, who played briefly for Birmingham in 2006, tweeted: “Great to see Harry Redknapp back in football management. Not an easy gig keeping Birmingham City up.”

And Davies, who spent two seasons at St Andrew’s before he joined current employers Hull City, posted on his account: “Blues wasted no time in appointing Redknapp. Hopefully he can work some magic and save them from the drop #BCFC“.

Meanwhile, Birmingham’s decision to turn to Redknapp has been described as “brave” by Football League pundit Adam Virgo.

“Harry Redknapp back in management @BCFC brave choice as been out the Championship for a while but wish him the best of luck”, he wrote.
